Literacy Instruction

Quality literacy instruction plays a critical role in supporting students’ reading, writing, and language development and ensuring they build the skills necessary for academic success.

We offer early literacy support for young learners, focusing on foundational skills such as phonemic awareness, phonics, and early writing development.

For older students in middle school and high school, interventions are tailored to strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary, and written expression, in specific disciplines as well as to address gaps in foundational literacy skills as needed.

Our services are available for students of all ages and are

individualized based on each student’s needs.

Ages 4 to 5

Early literacy skills form the foundation for reading and writing and begin developing at a young age. Although a common misconception, frustration due to reading difficulties can be prevented at a young age with early literacy support.

Support focuses on building phonemic awareness skills, which is absolutely critical for learning to read.

Through developmentally appropriate, play-based activities, early literacy support builds the sound and meaning of language, preparing children for successful reading development as they progress in school.

Literacy Instruction

Literacy Instruction
Ages 5 to 15

Literacy instruction is designed for students who would benefit from individual, additional support, or targeted instruction to strengthen foundational reading and language skills.

Instruction begins with initial assessments to identify specific areas in which a student would benefit from focused instruction in an area of essential components of skilled reading.

Essential Components of Skilled Reading include:

  • Phonological awareness

  • Phonics

  • Reading & Language Comprehension

  • Vocabulary

  • Fluency

Students do not need a formal diagnosis to benefit from literacy support. Instruction is individualized to meet each learner's unique needs.

Writing Instruction

Writing Instruction

Writing instruction supports students in strengthening their writing skills as they become effective and confident communicators.Instruction is intentionally designed to meet each student's individual needs and developmental level.

This may include building foundational skills such as handwriting, sentence structure, and grammar, as well as developing higher-level skills like organizing ideas, expanding vocabulary, and writing for different purposes and audiences.

Instruction may incorporate Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD), an evidence-based approach that explicitly teaches students strategies for planning, drafting, revising, and editing their writing. SRSD also supports the development of self-regulation skills such as goal setting, self-monitoring, and reflection, helping students become more independent writers.

What is the Science of Writing?

The science of writing is built on decades of research from experts around the world, showing what truly works in teaching writing. This evidence-based approach guides effective instruction for developing writing skills, from foundational abilities like handwriting and spelling to more advanced skills like generating ideas and organizing thoughts.

To learn more about effective writing practices, check out SRSD below.

Disciplinary Literacy

Middle & High School

Disciplinary literacy instruction for middle and high school focuses on helping students read, write, and think like experts within specific subject areas.

Unlike general literacy, disciplinary literacy recognizes that each field, such as literature, science, or history requires its own set of skills, strategies, and ways of processing information.

We support students in navigating complex, language-heavy texts by teaching them how to analyze and interpret content in ways that are authentic to each discipline.

Whether students need support with demanding school assignments, such as English Language Arts, or ongoing skill development, we provide targeted instruction that builds confidence and independence.

Our goal is to equip students with the tools they need to approach challenging material strategically, deepen their understanding, and succeed across all academic areas, because literacy is imbedded in all ares of life.
